Barbecue Held By Gelinas and Gravelle To Support Food Banks

pics 168bbqThe provincial and federal representatives for the Nickel Belt Riding demonstrated their commitment to the community of Valley East by organizing a fund-raising barbecue at the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre as part of the Valley East Days festivities. The NDP member of provincial parliament France Gelinas, is shown in front of the grill with Claude Gravelle, NDP member of the House of Commons for Nickel Belt. The increased demands being made upon the Good Neighbours and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Banks as a result of the economic impact of the global recession as well as the Vale INCO strike are cause for concern for the volunteers of those organizations. An appeal to the community for help has produced amazing results.

“We can’t believe how many more people are coming to see us this summer and fall,” explained Anne. “Many of them have young children and they just don’t know where to turn. We were very worried about being able to supply them with food, but as a result of the generousity shown by the community, it looks as if we are going to be able to at least provide them with emergency supplies.”
Support is coming from all areas of the community. Besides the barbecue held by Gelinas and Gravelle, Valley View Cleaners is collecting cash and food donations from its customers from now until Christmas. All you have to do is make a donation of an item of food, or a small cash donation, and Cecile will give you a 10% discount on your dry cleaning order.
If anyone is interested in dropping off food, you can do so at the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre in front of Food Basics or at The Vision Paper’s office at the top of the hill in Hanmer.
The Good Neighbours Food Bank is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the last two (2) Wednesdays of the month. The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Centre and Food Bank is open weekdays at the top of the hill in Val Caron. If you have any questions call Good Neighbours at 566-1283 or St. Vincent de Paul at 897-1212. All donations are welcome. And if you are in need of support, do not hesitate to contact someone for help. That is why the Food Banks have been established.
When the schools come calling for donations around Thanksgiving, please be generous.
